Double Shot Injection Molding (2K Molding) in Automated Production
This video shows our double shot injection molding cell running live on the floor. Two different thermoplastic materials are molded into a single integrated part within one machine cycle — no manual transfer, no glue, no secondary assembly.
What the footage captures:
• Two independent injection units (barrel A + barrel B) plasticizing different resins simultaneously
• First shot (substrate): rigid material — ABS, PC, or PA — injected into the first cavity to form the structural base
• Rotary platen indexing 180° while the substrate is still warm (optimal bonding window 40–60°C surface temp)
• Second shot (overmold): softer or contrasting material — TPE, TPU, or a second color — injected onto the substrate and chemically/mechanically bonded
• Automatic ejection of the finished two-material part and simultaneous filling of the next substrate cavity
• Robotic take-out or conveyor transfer to deflashing / inspection
Typical material combinations we run:
• ABS + TPE (soft-touch grips, medical handles)
• PC + TPU (impact zones, gasket-integrated housings)
• PP + TPE-O (automotive trim, appliance buttons)
• PA (Nylon) + TPU (gear hubs, wear-resistant seals)
• Dual-color ABS / PC/ABS for aesthetic switches and indicators
Mold & process specs:
• Machine type: 2K injection molding machine with rotary platen
• Mold material: H13 (1.2344) hardened steel, water-cooled, dual cavity set
• Tolerance: ±0.05mm standard; ±0.01mm on critical seated features after CNC
• Cycle time: 35–60s depending on wall thickness and material pair
• Tooling: Single tool, two stations, no intermediate handling
• Lead time: 15–30 days for tooling and first article
• Inspection: Bond check (peel/pull-out), dimensional CMM, visual, FAIR on request
Why double shot instead of assemble-after-molding:
Eliminates glue lines, fasteners, and tolerance stack-up. The bond is created at the molecular interface while the substrate is still warm, giving higher peel strength and better sealing than pick-and-place overmolding.

• Automotive interior switches, gear-shift knobs, vent bezels
• Consumer electronics keypads, soft-edged enclosures
